This is a State Natural Area. Access is by foot travel only, hiking or x-c skiing. Park in the Mt. Ashwabay parking lot and hike in on the ski trails or the old dirt access road to the log cabin/sugar house. There are maps at the trailhead. The cabin was built by the Nourse family in the 1920's if memory serves me right. Dan Nourse continued to work the sugarbush after selling the property to the State of Wisconsin for inclusion into the State Natural Area Program. Sadly, Dan passed away this past summer. The State is in the process of planning the construction of a parking on Ashwabay Outdoor Education Foundation (AOEF) property to better serve public access to this wonderful area. Any season is great for a visit. My favorites are autumn when the large mature sugar maples are in full color, and then during the winter on skis. AOEF maintains and grooms 42 kilometers of x-c ski trails in the area, both skate and classic. It's worth the visit!
