On our annual trek up to Madeline Island during August of 2008 my dad and I stumbled upon Tom and the Bayfield Bike Route right there next to Maggie's on Manypenny Ave. Sheepishly wheeling my '93 Trek Antelope 800 up to the shop door Tom greeted me and, surprisingly, was pumped to see my hoopty of a stead. After explaining that I'd be heading out to Montana for school that semester Tom suggested some new commuter tires, a rear rack, and a more appropriately sized stem. (My third grade-sized self was no longer the primary rider of concern regarding fit.) After a day or two in Tom's care she rode like a dream! Then, seven years later "Anty," as I refer to my bike, once again needed some surgical work done by Tom and the guys. So, Dad and I took another walk down to Tom's shop and, this time, met Trevor and Chris who masterfully outfitted Anty with a new drive-train, chain, and brake pads over the course of merely a weekend! (So rare to find a mainstream, much less a kick ass local, bike shop open on a Sunday.) Anty has never ridden so smoothly! All told, Tom is one of the most personable, intelligent, and solid wrenches (well, humans) there are. His fine staff of mechanics handled Anty professionally and honestly. I will always make a point to stop in and drop off my bike for maintenance during my annual pilgrimages to the South Shore of "The Boss," Lake Superior.
